About

About

Zero Waste Conference

Formed in 1987, Recycling Advocates (RA) is Oregon’s only citizen-based, grassroots group dedicated to engaging people in creating a sustainable future through local efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle. Our organization envisions a waste-free Oregon with a thriving circular economy which provides access to zero-waste resources and education for all.

Who We Are

The organization is run by an elected Board of Directors composed of solid waste professionals, policy activists, local business people and dedicated volunteers who have an interest in promoting recycling and waste reduction.
We are thrilled to host the two-day event in an effort to build coordinated statewide and regional momentum to meaningfully address the urgency of the climate crisis, increasing levels of consumption and plastic pollution, and address notable public interest in waste reduction and the future of a circular economy.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you in August and future events!

“Recycling Advocates’ commitment to environmentally sustainable work is critical to our community. I immediately jumped at the chance to join their Board of Directors. This opportunity to further my decades long focus on environmental issues has allowed me to become even more involved. It is an honor to assist Recycling Advocates in advancing its mission.”

Mikey Strauhal
“I became involved with Recycling Advocates through my pollution prevention work. I became a board member because I wanted to make real changes in my local community and I saw a way to do that through RA. I am excited to learn more about Oregon Recycling laws, help push for legislation that will reduce waste and educate our community. Joining a nonprofit like RA is a great way to social network and learn what are the major topics that need addressing today. I feel grateful and honored to be able to work as a board member for Recycling Advocates and encourage everyone to take action in their local community on the issues that mean the most to them.”
Molly Harpel
“The forests of the Pacific Northwest are known for their clean air, old growth trees, fresh spring water, and sweeping vistas. Through education, awareness, and the implementation of community-based zero waste strategies, Recycling Advocates helps protect these spaces and enhance the quality of life for all those who enjoy them. I look forward to working with this team to ensure all Oregonians have access to important resource recovery programs so we can reduce harmful impacts on our environment.”
Tara Knierim
“I am passionate about environmental issues and frustrated by the current state of waste and recycling in this country. I’m looking for a way to make a positive impact. I feel that serving on the board of Recycling Advocates is a great way for me to get involved. I’m excited at the prospect of further partnering with other organizations to further the mission of RA.”
